When you are the largest automobile manufacturer in the world and you have models which outsell your competitors in various segments in many countries across the globe, it eventually must happen that a Hybrid is introduced to take this success forward.

The Toyota Hilux which was first introduced in Japan in 1968 and has become one of the world’s most recognisable workhorse vehicles has achieved the number one top selling position in South Africa for decades. The Toyota Fortuner still commands the largest slice of the SUV segment in South Africa selling on average 800 units per month with 40% market share. Both icons are now available in Hybrid 48v format strengthening the company’s multi-technology pathway approach to carbon neutrality.

The powerful 2.8 litre diesel engine is underpinned by the addition of a hybrid 48V system specifically designed for the unique demands of Toyota’s dual use pick-up and SUV lifestyles. The engine drives a compact motor generator which in turn charges the new 48V lithium battery, which is situated under the rear seats to minimize impact on cabin space and weighs just 7,6kg. The 48V battery then supplies the vehicles 12V system through a new DC/DC converter. In summary the new battery is charged through deceleration and regenerating braking energy which would otherwise be lost. Once charged the battery sends up to 12kW of power and 650Nm of torque through the generator to the engine to enhance acceleration, power, and efficiency.

Combining with the motor generator is the Euro 6d-compliant, DOHC, 16 valve, 2.8-litre diesel engine which generates 150kW at 3 400 rpm and 500Nm of torque between 1 600 and 2 800rpm. Overall, this system improves braking performance, contributes to greater fuel efficiency with a smoother ride whether on the road or tackling tough terrain.
