The Toyota Prius is no stranger to the automobile market especially on the global stage where celebrities have made it an icon. Now in its 4 th – generation it continues to stand out from the crowd. The Prius is powered by the proven 1.8-litre Hybrid powertrain continuing unaltered combining electric motor with Toyota’s 4-Cylinder Atkinson cycle 2ZR- FXE engine for a total output of 90 kW. A dedicated EV-mode enables the vehicle to operate under full-electric power.
As the Prius is classified a Full-Hybrid and uses a self-charging powertrain to provide electric energy during deceleration or braking, regenerative energy is captured and stored in the battery. As such the Prius can operate solely on either the petrol engine, the electric motor, or a combination of both. The petrol engine can also charge the battery pack in the absence of regenerative braking, in standstill traffic for example.
