Volvo has officially announced the upcoming all-electric flagship SUV will wear the EX90 badge and will be the safest Volvo ever built. The EX90 will boast one of the most advanced sensor sets on the market. A unique suite of eight cameras, five radars, ten Ultrasonic sensors and innovative Light Detection and Ranging sensors will all contribute to Volvo’s vision in achieving a future with zero collisions.
Embedded in the roofline the class-leading LiDAR sensor can detect pedestrians at up to a 250-meter distance and something as small as a dark tyre on a black road at 120 meters ahead, all while travelling at highway speeds.
For improved driver understanding two cameras in the cabin observe the driver’s eye-gaze patterns and pick up early signals that indicate the driver may not be at their best. The system measures how much the driver looks at the road ahead and will understand when the driver’s eyes are focused on something other than driving. The capacitive steering wheel also plays a role in sensing if the driver lets go of the wheel and will monitor steering stability. Using complex algorithms, the car will be able to take corrective action when needed, from sounding a warning to even stopping the vehicle at the side of the road and activate the hazard warning lights.
Using these two new sensor systems the vehicle will not only be able to step in and assist the driver it will also have a better understanding of when its needed and how to assist in the best feasible way.
The global reveal of this new all-electric flagship EX90 will take place on 9th November 2022.
